PhD studentships: (opportunities organised by deadline)

UC Doctoral Scholarships

Duration: 3 years funded.
Eligibility: Open to suitably qualified international and domestic students. I usually shortlist 1-2 applicants to support each round.
Deadlines: Applications are continuously open. The deadlines for the for two annual assessment rounds are April and October, respectively.

Manaaki New Zealand PhD Scholarships

Duration: 3.5 years
Eligibility: Citizens of eligible Asian and Pacific countries.
Deadlines: Application portal opens 1 February; closes 28 February

Schlumberger Foundation – Faculty for the Future PhD Scholarships

Duration: Up to 4 years funded.
Eligibility: Women from developing or emerging economies.
Deadlines: Application portal opens in September and closes in November.

Note: At this time, UC’s School of Physical and Chemical Sciences cannot support CSC PhD applications. This is because these studentships do not include funding for the required NZ tuition fees.

Postdoctoral scholarships: (opportunities organised by deadline)

China Scholarship Council (CSC) Postdoctoral Fellowship

中国籍博士可申请国家公派博士后项目

• Duration: Up to 2 years funded.

• Eligibility: Chinese citizens with a PhD from a Chinese institution.

• Deadlines: Applications should be initiated by the end of January; the application portal closes March; results announced May.

DAAD PRIME Fellowship

• Duration: 18 months (12 months abroad + 6 months reintegration in Germany).

• Eligibility: PhD completed ≤6 years ago; any nationality; must not have spent >12 months in NZ in the past 3 years; German host university required.

Mana Tūāpapa Future Leader Fellowship (Royal Society Te Apārangi)

• Duration: 4 years funded.

• Eligibility: NZ citizens or New Zealand Permanent Resident Visa holders who are early-career researchers (0–4 years post-PhD).

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship

• Duration: 3 years funded (2 years outside EU + 1-year return phase).

• Eligibility: EU citizens or long-term residents who hold a PhD.

Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Postdoctoral Fellowship (Cross-Disciplinary)

• Duration: Up to 3 years funded.

• Eligibility: The project must be in the life sciences. PhD holders with ≤3 years post-PhD research experience; cannot have spent >12 months in NZ previously.

• Deadlines: Letter of Intent opens May; full proposal due September.

Fulbright US Scholar Award (New Zealand)

• Duration: 3–5 months

• Eligibility: US citizens who hold a PhD; for research (or lecturing) in NZ.

Canada Postdoctoral Research Award

• Duration: 2 years funded.

• Eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents who completed a PhD at a Canadian institution. PhD holders with ≤3 years research experience.

• Deadlines: the NSERC (natural sciences & engineering) application stream closes October.

Students holding a Chemistry Bachelor's: 

 

Students who are interested in joining the group should contact Dan. Options include:

 

1. Honours research projects.

 

2. Master's research projects.

Undergraduate students in Germany may apply for funding from the DAAD, which will fund 1-2 years of study abroad (ideal for an Honours and/or Masters project).

3. Externally-funded research visits, e.g.:

US citizens holding a Bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply for a Fulbright Graduate Award, which will fund a 1-year research stay. 

Undergraduate students:
 

Students who are interested in joining the group should contact Dan. Options include: 

1. Third year Bachelor's student research projects (CHEM330).

2. Summer research scholarships.

We typically support 1-2 undergraduate research projects each year. We have supported ca. 15 undergraduate students with projects over the past ~7 years.
